Jacksonville, Florida – at a point in time in history – had stated that they could not support a professional football team. However, ticket sales for the Jacksonville Jaguars have proven otherwise and have successfully supported the NFL franchise for years. Jaguar fans are dedicated and continue to purchase tickets and show up to all their home games regardless of their season record.
It was in’92 that the NFL was considering adding another franchise to the league, they just did not know where. Jacksonville, FL was in the running – obviously – along with Charlotte, NC, St. Louis, MO, Baltimore, MD, and Memphis, TN with Jacksonville being at the bottom of the list. After all, Florida was already the home to two NFL franchises.
There were many other reasons that Jacksonville was at the bottom of the list. The city was considered too small to support a professional team, television ratings were dangerously low, and the other cities were better options – overall. However, went put to the test, the city of Jacksonville sold 10,000 tickets in under 10 days – proof that the city could – financially – support an NFL franchise.
The 2009 season will be their 17th year in the league. As of yet, the Jaguars have not made it to a Super Bowl game, but they continually get close. In fact, the made it to the playoffs three times in their first four years – a record in the NFL. In both’96 and’99, the team fought for the AFC Division title – to no prevail but they tried.
The 2007 season proved to be another profitable year for the team as they closed the season with only two losses. Everyone expected this streak to carry into the next season – 2008 – but were proven wrong. The 2008 season ended up being the teams’ record worst and is one they wish they could replay.
The Jaguars where cheered for – game after game – by thousands of fans, investors, and even management, but to no prevail. The Jaguars were given plenty of opportunities to cease each game, but something was missing. After the Bengals game, where the Jaguars were beat by a team that had not won a game all season, everyone knew the season would end in disappointment.
The loss to the Bengals pushed the Jaguars in to an aggressive / defensive play mode – one that was not beneficial until one of their last games of the season. When the Jaguars played the Detroit Lions, they won the game by a last minute field goal. This opportunity was missed in many of the earlier games in the season.
There is no sugarcoating it, 2008 was a bad year for the Jaguars. Fans and players are; however, hopeful that 2009 will be a better year – one like they have played so many of in the past. Injured players are back this year, along with some new faces; the combination of these two things is giving the team – and fans – hope again. Fans are already looking for season tickets and, like always, will fill the stands during every home game.

If there is one vehicle globally that can be said to have set the design and engineering sectors of the automobile industry hurtling towards basic acceptance of small front wheel drive cars – it can be said to be the Austin Mini project. Mini’s made the concept of small “cars” acceptable – both mechanically , functionally on the roads and highways of Britain , North America and indeed the global auto market. Indeed the Japanese automakers – be it Toyota, Nissan , Mazda or Subaru readily admit that their first model and business models that they learned from in the auto trade were the British automakers. What other roadside car would of been their stalwart model – nothing else but the Austin Mini models with their front wheel drive , transversely mounted 4 cycle engine that were both simple , economical and ultimately lovable.
In the beginning it seems that the venerable Austin Mini did not even have its later badge of fame – its moniker of “Mini”. The vehicle was initially introduced as the Austin Se7en and the Morris ( not the Austin factory branded ) Mini-Minor. The only distinction between the Austin factory output model and the Morris branded product being not any major body or mechanical components only the badge and grill of the vehicles. Talk about a forerunner and pre-telling of the auto industry trends to come. In later years when GM Auto engineers being asked the difference between a 1982 compact Cadillac Cimarron in 1982 and its General Motors cousins – the Chevrolet Cavalier, Buick Skyhawk, Oldsmobile Firenza, Pontiac J200 models would be told that in essence the only difference was in the price tag of the new vehicle at their local dealership.
Yet to its credit the mini was not only sort of cute – some called it ugly – but advanced simple standards of driver comforts yet to come in the future – for example map storage areas on the drivers and passenger doors – obstensively for maps but deep enough to be used for carrying home even small grocery items. The first minis rolled off the assembly line in Britain on May 8 , 1959 and showed up on streets and highways shortly after during August 1959. It was even priced in British terms at less than $ 540 British Pounds Sterling – the American dollar equivalent being less than $ 1000.
Yet this little mutant of a car not only had a low cost and external size, it held an innovative design that even though tiny in size it could seat 4 adults and perhaps 5. The secret was an adoption of front wheel drive with a transversely mounted engine and transmission. Now held as the standard, at that point in automobile history most autos were “rear wheel driven” with a large drive train running down the middle of the floor of the vehicle taking up passenger space and adding weight. Rear engine vehicles are simpler to build and maintain and less expensive to design, engineer and install at the factory level. Yet the heavy drive train not only adds weight to the vehicle, requiring a larger and heavier engine, it also takes away from interior passenger space. So the innovative design of the Austin Mini had great merit in allowing for a smaller vehicle, with a smaller engine that had a reasonable interior seating space, and had reasonable pickup all with less cost, and overall auto owner and motorist’s driving costs and budget.
Hence it is no accident that the Austin Mini became such a favored and revered role model for future designs and implementations along the path of the development of smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles.
